CitySpace: Bermondsey

‘THE HARTLEY at CitySpace’ named after the famous Jam factory that proudly stands in view, opened in 1901. It occupied the site of a former tannery in BERMONDSEY, known at the time as ‘London’s Larder’. Bermondsey’s is steeped in history, the iconic ST SAVIOURS DOCK which once moored cargo ships that were regularly attacked by pirates.

However, the area, originally famous for its tanneries and leatherworking had, by the 1970s moved on and the antique dealers moved in. The ANTIQUES MARKET said to be the best in Europe, can still be experienced every week on a Friday morning at Bermondsey Square. Traders sell everything from cutlery to furniture and china to jewellery plus the unexpected.

Situated South of the river and a 20-minute walk from the City, BERMONDSEY has made ‘The TimesBest Places’ list for six years in a row. It’s warehouse vibe still feels fresh, historic and a little bit secret.

DELICIOUS GRUB

The Hartley at CitySpace neighbours Bermondsey Street which remains a civilised and romantic place for an evening stroll and some sexy food.

It’s Spanish favoured foodie premises ‘JOSE PIZARRO’S restaurant and tapas bar’ complement the French finest ‘CASSE-CROUTE’ and ‘PIQUE-NIQUE’ on offer.

Bermondsey is awash with trendy coffee shops such as ‘F*CKOFFEE' and beautifully rustic ones: ‘HEJ’ and the ‘WATCH HOUSE’. The revamped period pubs, ‘THE GREGORIAN’ and ‘ST JAMES OF BERMONDSEY’,  are popular establishments with a cool young vibe.
